Choosing a Hostess gift

With spring break season upon us, and summer right around the corner (please please please), I've put together my thoughts on how to choose hostess (or host) gifts for discerning in-laws, friends, and relatives who may be welcoming us with open arms to their homes.
I recently was lucky enough to stay in Park City, UT at my friend-from-college's-in-law's house. PHEW. We had the gal's trip of a lifetime; lots of skiing, delicious food, and hot tub yaps. We wanted to show our appreciation to our hosts by getting them something they could open the next time they came to their house.

Why buy a hostess gift?
To demonstrate your thanks to your host! Sometimes a simple handwritten note will do, but if you're like me and you generally come with 3 humans and potentially 2 dogs in tow, it's nice to show your appreciation for their hospitality on a deeper level.
What items make an appropriate gift?
Think about what your host likes to do: do they like to have dinner parties, host family quite often, or stay in? A nice platter from a local shop, or a case of your favorite wine would be a great gift. Do your hosts like to paint the town red? A gift certificate from a local restaurant is always a go-to.
How much should I spend on a hostess gift?
That depends on your budget! Anywhere from $15-$200 should be able to get you a thoughtful token of your appreciation during your visit. In my case, we had a group of 5 ladies and so we split a silver platter from Gorsuch (similar to this one) that gave a nod to the house's mountainous surroundings without feeling too "holiday" (btw I am sorry I don't have better pics from our shopping trip the entire store is TO DIE FOR. I generally try to not have my phone out when I am with people which makes me terrible at creating content!!). Some other items we considered/I admired:

Love the little skier bowl!
Handwritten notes are always well received.
